Countries that are parties to the Kyoto Protocol committed to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which are responsible for the global warming process. Kyoto protocol parties designed several flexibility mechanisms that allow contaminant industries to offset their emissions under a world widely applicable carbon emission trading scheme.
Working in line with the targets proposed by Kyoto, some non-profit organizations have developed voluntary emission markets where companies and institutions are capable of demonstrating their commitment to the environment and offsetting their emissions. Within these voluntary programs, it is possible to generate and to commercialized carbon credits or Voluntary Emission Reduction (VER’s). In contrast to the mechanism defined by Kyoto, these projects can be constructed in every part of the world.
What is the Verified Carbon Standard- VCS?
Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) is one of the voluntary schemes that has been implemented worldwide. Projects performed under this standard are conducted in line with the methodologies and technical principles defined by by ISO 14064 and 14065. These projects need to be validated and verified by an independent body that has been accredited by the UNFCCC or the American National Standards institute.
Validation against the technical requirements defined by VCS assures that all generated carbon credits are in line with the principles of additionality, transparency, independency and traceability. Once the project is registered with the VCS, its information is made publicly available.
VCS accepts all sectoral scopes applicable under the CDM from energy to forestry and land use projects. Applus+ Certification has been a VCS-approved validation and verification body since 2010.
