The provisions of Royal Decree 1718/2010, on medical prescriptions and dispensing orders, states that private medical prescriptions, both in paper and electronic format, must incorporate security measures that guarantee their authenticity, the identity of the prescriber and his or her authorization for professional practice. The general councils of medical, dental and podiatry associations are responsible for introducing the necessary measures or systems to guarantee their authenticity and prevent fraud.
On 19th December 2019, the General Councils of the Official Associations of Doctors, Dentists, Podiatrists and Pharmacists signed a collaboration agreement establishing the bases, implementation, operation and governance of the Electronic Private Prescription System (Sistema de Receta Privada Electrónica). The result of which enables a private healthcare medicine prescribed electronically to be dispensed in any pharmacy office nationwide, developing for this purpose a certification scheme in which the requirements for the certification of Prescription Systems and Prescription Repositories are established.
